The engraving doesn't look like my template. Why might that be?Updated 9 days ago

If the engraving doesn't look exactly like the template you uploaded (for example a fingerprint, paw print, nose print or handwriting), in many cases it comes down to technical and design adjustments that are needed to make the engraving clean and durable on a very small piece of jewelry.

Why can the engraving differ?

1) The template is optimized for engraving

To keep the lines clearly visible on metal, the file is often contrast-enhanced, simplified or converted into lines. Very fine details, shading or ‘soft’ transitions can therefore come out looking a little different from the original file.

2) Size and engraving area are limited

A pendant or ring only offers a certain surface. If the template is very detailed, lines have to be adjusted slightly so they don't run together or look messy at a small size.

3) Photo quality makes a big difference

Blurry, dimly lit or low-contrast templates (for example prints with shadows, shaky photos, glossy paper) can make the result look different from what you expected.

4) Material and finish play a part

Depending on the material, coating and finish (for example polished, matte, gold-plated), the engraving can appear more or less pronounced. Light and viewing angle change the impression as well.

What can you do now?

Step 1: compare the file you uploaded

Check whether the file you uploaded really was the version you wanted (sometimes a similar photo or an older file gets uploaded by mistake).

Step 2: send us a photo so we can look into it

So we can assess it quickly, please send us:

  • a photo of the engraving (as sharp as possible, in good light, ideally from two angles)

  • your order number

  • and ideally the engraving template again as an attachment

Then we can check whether:

  • the wrong file was matched to your order,

  • the template was hard to read when uploaded,

  • or the optimization came out too strong.
